Current Series: Litanies

I am continuing to work on a series of paintings inspired by my travels to Normandy where in 1999 the Department of Art at the State University of West Georgia initiated a summer art program in Bayeux. The series, entitled Litanies, is a continuation of my desire to physically add non-traditional elements, such as diabetic test strips, stainless steel rods, or hand-made lace to traditional watercolors. I have also been adding text to my paintings in the manner of the ancient Chinese, as a means of enhancing the content of the work, as well as having the writing become an interesting visual element.

The cathedral in Bayeux has a relic of St. Teresa, the Little Flower who lived nearby, and many of the French light candles at her altar seeking assistance. Seeing the flickering candles among the fresh cut flowers rekindled in me my days as an altar boy reciting and singing prayers in Latin. The Litanies, therefore are a natural artistic outgrowth combining watercolor, text, and non-traditional elements.
